South Texas summers are known for their withering heat, but Porsche’s Taycan 4S adds a whole new dimension to make you sweat. Boasting 522 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque, Porsche’s inaugural all-electric model is a bold exclamation point meant to 𝒅𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒆 the wild west that is the luxury sports car market.

The exterior of the Taycan is reminiscent of the 𝑷𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒂, and features Tron-like headlights. The interior is comfortable and subtle. You get the impression Porsche wanted people to take the Taycan seriously. There is no polished chrome, no wood varnish, no gold-plated gizmos - just simple, elegant, 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒇𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒚-𝒄𝒓𝒂𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒅 design. The backseats feature plenty of head and legroom for passengers, and the infotainment dashboard is a work of art (Tesla would be wise to take note). In a world that is all speed and productivity, it is clear that Porsche’s designers slowed down and considered every aspect of design with the Taycan.

Behind the wheel, the ride is 𝒔𝒎𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒑𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒖𝒍. Whatever hesitations you had buying an all-electric sports car disappear the moment you slam the pedal to the floor and hurl yourself from 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds. In our test drive, we couldn’t wipe the shameless grins from our faces. It could’ve been the adaptive air suspension that felt like you were driving on a cloud or maybe it was 𝑷𝒐𝒓𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒆’𝒔 𝑬𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒄 𝑺𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝑺𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 system that pumps the Taycan’s drive sound through the speakers - something we recommend for your right foot - or perhaps it could’ve been the g-forces that shoved us into our seats during acceleration that kept those grins plastered to our faces. Whatever it was, all we can say is the Taycan is one hell of a machine and a 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒖𝒗𝒂 𝒍𝒐𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒇𝒖𝒏 to drive.

Offered in several different models, the base model Taycan starts at $79,900, the Taycan 4S at $103,800, the Taycan Turbo at $150,900, and the Taycan Turbo S at a solid $185,000. It’s hard to imagine needing a car faster than the Taycan 4S, but for those who do, the Taycan Turbo S will get you just about anywhere from 0-60 𝒎𝒑𝒉 𝒊𝒏 2.6 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒔. The model we tested had a range of 227 miles on a full battery. Maybe you’re concerned about climate change and carbon emissions or maybe you’ve heard the hype around all-electric vehicles and want to dip your toe in the proverbial water - whatever your reason - the Taycan 4S is a veritable choice for those who do not want to sacrifice 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆, 𝒍𝒖𝒙𝒖𝒓𝒚, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 (#Tesla, we’re looking at you).
