It’s big, it’s beautiful, and you’re gonna love it. šŸ˜‰

While waiting to get our hands on the 2024 Toyota Tundra (Oh we got one! Even better: We put a ring on it!), a great friend allowed us the privilege of driving his 2022 Tundra. Shout out to Fahd! ؓکریہ !!!

WHY IT MATTERS

For 2022, the Tundra continues that stellar legacy of Toyota-ness adding an updated face and some new tech. It rides on the same platform as the Lexus LX and the non-stateside Land Cruiser, meaning it’s good from the ground up. This trim, or in Tundra speak - grade, is the SR5 CrewMax 4WD.

OUR TAKE

It’s big! Space is definitely at a premium here as would be expected in a full-size truck. Somehow though, the Tundra feels even more spacious. The fit and finish of the interior is typical Toyota, solid and unfussy. Hard plastics are where you expect them to be - it’s a real truck after all - and good storage spaces are integrated into the center console and doors. No real complaints on the interior truckiness. The seats, though firm and supportive are comfortable. The steering wheel controls feel and look a bit dated still, but are very functional. The software for the infotainment is also a bit on the opposite side of cutting edge, but this is what Toyota does well - if it ain’t broke…

On the outside that big presence is enhanced in this specimen, with this remarkable Lunar Rock (6X3) color. Along with the black out trim pieces and tailgate insert, grill, window-surround and wheels, this is quite the sophisticated looking truck.

This is a big 5390 lbs truck and as expected, reminds you of it’s heft ever so often especially in sharp corners. Even so, the drive is quite smooth and the cabin is quiet. At the speeds that this truck will spend 99% of it’s life, it’s more than just adequate of a drive - dare I say playful even - if you know what you’re doing. At times it can get a bit bouncy, most notably over uneven tarmac and expansion joints, or when the camber changes in a slalom. This may only be a thing with the lowered suspension and Bilstein shocks. The air suspension setup on higher grades may not be the same experience.

But will it truck?

12,000 lbs of towing capacity - Capably tow your toys 1940 lbs of payload capacity - Easily haul your tools 389 hp @5200 rpm - Not lacking in power 479 lb-ft @2400 rpm - Quite enough push 0-60 in 6.2s - It can scoot 60-0 in 135ft - Decent. A 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 RST 4x4 4Matic @5420 lbs does it in 133ft but what’s a few inches šŸ˜‰

LOWS

A little bouncy at times in this grade with the lowered sport suspension and Bilstein shocks No surround view camera in this grade This grade lacks the large 14in screen of upper grades Buttons and infotainment graphics are a bit yesteryear The 3.6L V6 engine might just up and well…die. Ugh.

HIGHS

Space, in spades Adequate power with this iForce v6 Smooth shifting and quiet cabin Basic modern safety features are standard A nice pre-owned specimen can be had for the high 30s You could get a free engine replacement from Toyota! Yay!

Oh but wait until you see what we added to the ModernChassis stable for ’24! Spoiler alert: It’s big, it’s beautiful and you’re gonna love it! šŸ˜‰šŸ˜‰
